Our mission is to provide children with tools to combat stress and emotional trauma.

WHAT ARE BREATHING BUDDIES

THE PROBLEM

Children in South Africa are living in environments both at home and in school that expose them to violence, severe distress, and trauma. The more vulnerable the individual, the less access typically to support structures and fewer resources for self- soothing. Lack of coping mechanisms can lead to inadequate emotional resilience, and increased chances of the child failing in later life.

THE NEED

Childhood self-control predicts physical and mental health, management of anxiety, ADHD, substance dependence, personal finances, and criminal offending outcomes – following a gradient of self-control. Training of their attentional circuitry helps children to not only focus, but also manage distressing emotions.

THE SOLUTION

Through mindfulness meditation, we teach children from 3 – 18 years a proven technique to overcome stress with the help of a Breathing Buddy. Lying down, the child places the Breathing Buddy on their stomach, and concentrates in the toy as they inhale and exhale. The boy or girl will quickly regain their composure- typically within 2 – 3 minutes.

PLEASE HELP

I am looking for business groups, NGO’s, corporates, individuals and social initiative groups to get involved and sponsor Breathing Buddies to as many children and schools as possible. I will be instrumental in teaching and being involved at a grassroots level. *breathing buddies handmade in South Africa by Woza Moya crafters.
